San Francisco, known for its history of historical buildings and neighborhoods. The land was first found, taken, and named Yerba Buena on June 27, 1776 by Spanish colonists. At the time, Mexico was still a Spanish coloney, but then in 1821, Mexico won its independence from Spain. The land that had previously belonged to Spain now belonged to Mexico, which also included San Francisco.

Then in the 1840’s, an influx of Americans settled in California, then eventually tried to declare the land which at the time belonged to Mexico, a republic. However this did not end up happening. After the Mexican-American war, California now belonged to America. In 1846 the American Navy raised an American flag in Yerba Buena. The name, Yerba Buena was ultimately discarded and replaced with San Francisco.

In 1848, an abundence of gold was found in California, which lead to lots of people moving to California for the Gold Rush. San Francisco became the centeral port of all these people coming into the state. People came to California, in hopes of making it rich and returning to their homes. However, many did not fufill that dream. Only a few people were lucky enough to return home rich from the Gold Rush. Though not everyone reached their dreams, many decided to settle in San Francisco, the city that then became their home.
